Whether the building at Uppåkra should be regarded as a cult house, a hall or a temple might be a semantic detail. From a holistic perspective, it is rather a question of whether there are any real differences between these three hypothetical structures in terms of the role they would have played for the Iron Age societies at Uppåkra. For centuries, maybe for most of the first millennium, Uppåkra was a place of religious and political power; remains of a pre-Christian temple excavated during 2000–2004 demonstrated that it was also an important cult place. Since the entire area of the building has been excavated and since the site is undamaged from later excavations, for the first time, an ancient Nordic temple has been studied in its entirety purely archaeological.
